The John Haycraft Classroom Exploration Scholarship

In 2006 Jane Willis and Corony Edwards won a British Council ELT Innovation award for their book ‘Teachers Exploring Tasks in English Language Teaching’ and kindly donated their award to finance a scholarship to the IATEFL Exeter conference in 2008. The number and quality of applications for this scholarship demonstrated that it should be offered annually. International House have stepped in to ‘adopt’ this scholarship and there will be two awards a year from Cardiff 2009 on.

The aim of the scholarship is to encourage teachers to embark on or to continue small-scale classroom exploration projects to shed light on learner/learner, learner/teacher interactions in their own lessons. The scholarship is named in memory of the founder of International House, John Haycraft.

Teachers interested in applying for the scholarship in 2010 should be prepared to submit a research outline with its rationale (not more than 500 words) to the IATEFL office by 1st September 2009. The winner will be selected two weeks later and will then be expected to present a paper at the annual IATEFL conference. Applicants can enter projects already under way or planned for the academic year 2009 - 2010.

Each award is for £1,000 to be used to meet project expenses, an IATEFL membership subscription and some attendance expenses for the IATEFL main conference.

A further International House Training and Development Scholarship is offered with IATEFL. The aim of this new scholarship is to enable a teacher trainer/developer working in either private or state sector education to present his/her work to a wider audience by giving a presentation at the IATEFL annual conference. The trainer/developer should also be in a position to disseminate knowledge and skills from the conference back to the local workplace.
